Disaster Survival Kit and an Emergency Plan

Along with having a good Disaster Survival Kit, having a good emergency plan is a major factor in survival. Whether it’s a major disaster or a lesser emergency, you should know exactly what to expect and what you have to do, before it happens. And for the same reason as keeping the disaster survival kit ready, there might not be time to make arrangements and it’s certainly not the best time to try to figure out what to do.

Should you have to leave your home fast you need to know the best escape route, and an alternate, whether you live in a big building or a private house. And once you’re out, how will you make sure that your family is OK? Decide in advance where you will meet if you get separated. How will you communicate if you’re not together when it happens? Cell phones may not work, so it’s a good idea to have a contact person, a friend or relative in another place that you can all call and get information from each other.

And make sure everyone knows where the disaster survival kit is.

By having a disaster survival kit, making a plan and being prepared to take care of yourself in an emergency, you also allow community resources and emergency response teams to be used more effectively in helping others in your community.

Disaster Survival Kits, 72 Hour Kits and Bug Out Bags, so Many Names

The hardest part of surviving a disaster is the first 3 days, so organizations like FEMA recommend that this is the amount of time that you prepare for. Because of this Disaster Survival Kits are often called 72 hour kits. And because they’re designed so you can just grab and go, many people now refer to them as bug out bags. But whatever name you like best, they need to have the most important thing you’ll need to survive. For starters, you’ll need to have a minimum of food and water and you’ll need a few items to aid in protection from the elements, like blankets, a rain poncho or even a tent. A really good Disaster Survival Kit should include more than just the bare essentials, items such as a working flashlight, a battery powered radio for news updates, a first aid kit
and a multifunction knife can really come in handy. And depending on the
particular types of disasters you might face, you may want to add a few more
items to the list.

A Disaster Survival Kit ups Your Odds of Survival

By keeping a Disaster Survival Kit ready, you ensure that your odds of survival, during and after an emergency, are higher than they are for most. Even when common sense dictates that we should be prepared for any emergency, very few people are prepared for even a small one. So how would they ever survive a real disaster? Tornadoes, Hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, fires, power outages, and acts of terrorism are some of the potential disasters that we could face, and when these things strike, minutes matter.

What do you do when you wind up with no power, no gas, no water and maybe even no home? What if the stores have closed already or they just don’t have anything left? How will you take care of yourself until the emergency teams arrive? If you’re not ready in advance, you won’t have enough time to collect all of the things that you need to get through it, and that’s if you even have them all. By keeping a Basic Disaster Survival Kit ready to go without needing to waste precious preparation time, you’ll know that you will have the essential supplies and tools you need and you won’t have to use precious time collecting them.

A Disaster Survival Kit Ensures that You’ll be Ready

With a Basic Disaster Survival Kit you can get out fast and be sure that you’ll have what you need to get through a tough situation. Disasters won’t wait for you to be ready for them, make sure you don’t wait for a disaster to strike before you’re ready.

Very few people are prepared for a disaster, many who aren’t won’t make it through and others have a nightmare of a time getting through it. Earthquakes, Hurricanes, Tornadoes, Floods and Fires are just some of the types of disasters that many people face, every year. If a disaster happens and you know the basic things you can do to be better prepared your chances of survival increase astronomically.

The first thing you should do is to become aware of the types of disasters or emergencies that are likely to affect your area. Learn what they do and how they can affect you. Will they cause blackouts or high winds, for example?

Make sure you have a plan. Talk to your family about what you all should do if something does happen. What should everyone expect? If you need to escape your home, where will you meet? How will you communicate if you’re separated? And be sure they know where the Disaster Survival Kit is.

If there’s a chance you’ll be trapped inside of your house, check the supplies you have and get missing items next time you are out shopping: flashlights, batteries, food that won’t spoil and bottled water are most important. It’s a good idea to have extra blankets handy and make sure you have a first aid kit available. Learning basic first aid and CPR couldn’t hurt, it can come in handy at anytime and not just during major events.

As the owner of a disaster survival kit and emergency preparedness supply company I notice it every time, people waiting to the last minute to get ready. They encounter massive lines at retail stores for food, water, flashlights, batteries and other types of emergency supplies, if there are still any left. And all too often, a disaster strikes without warning, leaving you no time at all to get ready.
Don’t be one of them, get a kit and be prepared.
